Flyby Review: Amy Grant's Tennessee Christmas

It just wouldn't be Christmas without some Amy Grant music playing!  I was excited to get this CD to review while getting ready for the holiday season!

The album "Tennessee Christmas" has some new songs and some old favorites.  During some of the songs, Amy waxes nostalgic and talks about Christmases she remembers and her kids being young.  I guess I'm not quite ready for the nostalgic memory-type of album, since my kids are all still home.  I don't tend to like a lot of talking in the middle of songs.  I just like straight Christmas music.  All of the songs were also pretty slow and drug out a little too much for me.  I like a peppier, more energetic sound.  All in all, this was probably my least-favorite of Amy Grant's Christmas albums.

All that said, Amy Grant is still Amy Grant, and as someone pointed out, her voice never seems to age or change.  She graces every piece with the quality we've come to know is only from Amy!  If you enjoy Christmas music with a bit of nostalgia, this album may be just what the doctor ordered!

Listen to one of the new songs, "To Be Together," a song inspired by Amy's daughter's car accident, at the following link and see if this is an album you'd like to add to your collection!

You can purchase the album here:

Also, as part of this project, please upload any videos you may have of you surprising loved ones for the holidays to social media.
Bloggers are free to ask their readers to post these to socials using the hashtag #TNChristmasSurprise! We’ll be making a compilation video and posting it to Amy’s socials – this specific video has not been announced yet though.
Similar to this video: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lfa22gpczyqmhfy/ChristmasSurprise.MOV?dl=0
Those chosen will be part of a compilation video that Amy herself will share on her large social media outlets!

Happy listening and Merry Christmas!

Flyby Review: Bible Journaling Kit

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you know I love scrapbooking.  I can spend hours journaling every event and picture for my family.  So what better way to delve into my Bible study than by journaling?  I was so excited to get this Bible Journaling Kit - it was like Christmas coming early!

The kit includes:
·         4 sheets of word stickers
·         4 sheets of alphabet stickers
·         24 tab stickers
·         8 colored pencil twists
·         1 journaling pen
·         1 pouch with adjustable strap to fit Bibles of all sizes
·         1 ruled page protector mat with tracing lines

If you are like me, you won't want to write and doodle in your nice leather-bound Bible with the beautiful, thin pages (if you even have one, instead of an app!).  I really only like to underline a few things in my nice Bible.  But don't feel like you can never make notes in a Bible.  One of my greatest treasures is my grandfather's old leather-bound Bible, full of his notes, markings, and favorite verses. It gives me a chance to see what he was thinking when he was studying and what verses had the most meaning for him.  So I have a hard-cover, $6 Bible that I use for highlighting and making notes during my devotions.  It has slightly thicker pages and is by now quite colorful!  Somehow, highlighting and making notes in an app has not been quite the same for me.

This is honestly one of my favorite things I've gotten to review.  It would make a wonderful gift for the scrapbooker in your life!

I'm running a little late with this review, but you still have a few days to register for the publisher's giveaway of five Bible Journaling Kits!  Winners will be announced on December 15, 2016.  There are also FREE coloring pages to download from the webpage!  Click here:  http://bit.ly/BibleJournalingKitGiveaway

You can find the Bible Journaling Kit at these retailers:
Barnes & Noble: http://bit.ly/BNBibleJournaling
Amazon: http://bit.ly/BibleJournaling
Books-A-Million: http://bit.ly/BAMBibleJournaling
Christian Book Distributors: http://bit.ly/CBDBibleJournaling
Enjoy your journaling!

Kids' Profile on Kindle - Parental Controls

(Post contains affiliate links)

You may be thinking of taking advantage of Amazon's great Cyber Monday deals to get your child a Kindle for Christmas.  We'll be talking all month on this blog about using the Kindle for Homeschool.

First of all, what advantages does the Kindle have for children?  If you get the Kids Edition Kindle Fire (above), you get a kid-proof case, a 2-year worry-free guarantee, and a free year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited.  You may also opt for the 8GB Kindle Fire (below) that is only $33.33 for Cyber Monday, but I would definitely recommend also getting a case to go with it.

The big advantage with using either Kindle with kids is the great PARENTAL CONTROLS.  Once you get a Kindle, whether it's a regular one or one with a kids' case, you can set up a kid's profile within your own profile. I love this option. When you set up your child's profile, you choose which games, books, etc to include on your child's profile. You can set limits on the time your child can play each day, and you can set individual limits for any-game-play, educational game play, or reading only. I have mine set up so that my 11-yo son's Kindle comes on at 7:30 am and turns off at 9:30 pm. During the day, he can read the books I have approved at any time, as long as he wants to. He has one hour of game play per day, but he has to read for 30 minutes before it will allow him to play the games. I could also set it up that he had to do a certain amount of educational app time before he could play other games. I have videos and the web browser turned off, but you can turn them on and limit their time as well. There is no email available for the child profile, and you can't get "in-app purchases" on the child's profile. That is good as far as not letting your child purchase things while using an app, but it has frustrated me a few times as well. For instance, I purchased a math-practice game that came with addition and subtraction practice, and there was an upgrade you could purchase to practice multiplication and division. I purchased the game and the upgrade, but only the addition and subtraction will work in the child profile, not the multiplication and division.

All in all, this is a great tool to use for homeschool.

There are lots of free and low-cost books and apps for the Kindle, so you can start loading them now to have it all ready for your child at Christmas.  (Disclaimer:  While some free books are wonderful, there are other times you "get what you pay for;" i.e. spelling and grammar may not have been edited as they would be in a regular, published book.  I will be alerting my readers to Freebies all month, but the only ones I have edited or checked for editing are those by Knowledge Box Central, the company for which I work.)

Here is a freebie to get you started:

Black Friday - Yay or Nay?

Are you a Black Friday shopper?  I did some shopping today - online, from the leather recliner in my living room, with the heat set at 70 degrees F.  I love deals, but crowds, traffic, and cold are not for me!

That being said, I do like to take advantage of the big deals.  I buy most of my household items and clothing at thrift stores, and I pay full price for almost nothing.  There are some great deals on Amazon today.  And yes, I am an affiliate, so I'm doing some advertising here, but I also want to talk about one of my favorite things, Homeschooling with a Kindle.

As anyone who has been on this blog a few times knows, I work for Knowledge Box Central.  We publish lapbooks, unit studies, etc., for homeschoolers, as well as educational materials for public school teachers.  One of my jobs is to convert our unit studies for Kindle.  People ask me all the time about how to use Kindle in your homeschool and how our products work on Kindle.  So, since we have a lull in the school year right now, and it's a GREAT time to buy a Kindle, I'm going to have a series over the next month on Homeschooling with your Kindle.  There will be resources, information, and lots of Freebies, so check back with me often, especially if you are new to the Kindle world.

If you are thinking about a Kindle for school, Christmas, or both, you need to take advantage of the Black Friday sale.  This is one of the items that is heavily discounted this weekend.  If you order today, you should have your Kindle early next week.  Then you can hang out with me online this month and fill up your Kindle (or your child's) with lots of goodies!
