Momentum Review: Pureflix Resurrection Day Movies (and a Giveaway)

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.  He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

Matthew 28:5-6 NIV

These are truly some of the most beautiful words ever spoken.

Imagine the women, confused by the events of the last few days.  They had believed in Jesus, and he had been killed brutally before their eyes.  According to the traditions of the Passover and the Sabbath, they had not even been able to give him a decent burial (though in the Gospel of John we find out that Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea had wrapped his body with myrrh and spices before laying him in the tomb).  Early Sunday morning, as soon as the Sabbath ended, they hurried to make preparations.  They knew the tomb was guarded by Roman guards, but they went anyway, hoping to be allowed to. . . what?  See the body?  Give it a better preparation?  Just be there to weep and perhaps find a bit of closure?

Closure was not what they found.

The tomb itself was not even closed.  The guards were gone.  The body was not there.  

Jesus was gone!

Fear set in.  Anxiety.   What had happened here?  Were the Romans so cruel that they would take the body of Jesus and hide it from them?  Would Jesus' followers be arrested, and perhaps killed?

And then they saw two men they did not know.  Men more terrifying than the Roman soldiers.  Men dressed in dazzling white clothing that was not of this world.

"Do not be afraid."

These men gave the women the news that has spread and that has given us hope for the past 2,000 years.  The news that we will never have to be afraid again.

My grandfather and my dad always called Easter "Resurrection Day," the Day that Jesus rose as the firstborn of all Creation, and the Day that gives us the promise that we will one day rise to eternal life as well.

Resurrection Day is one of my favorite times of the year.  I love the stories, I love the music, and I love Easter movies.  I love historical period movies that are well done, that make the Greatest Story Ever Told come to life while we watch.  Normally, I like feel-good movies.  Movies that are appropriate for children.  Movies with a little bit of comedy that I can relax and enjoy watching and not have to think too hard about.

The Passion of the Christ, however, is an exception.

I would love to dwell in the glory of the Resurrection, listening to triumphant music, donning my new Easter dress or bonnet and thinking only of the happy ending to this story.  That is all important, and indeed we should spend most of our lives realizing and being thankful for the Resurrection.  But sometimes, we need to really meditate on the road it took to get there.  Our sin was a great.  Our punishment would be unbearable for us. To truly appreciate the Resurrection, we need to know what Jesus really did for us.  As uncomfortable as it is, we need to see the size and the roughness of the cross.  The length of the spikes that went through Jesus's hands and feet.  The cruelty of the Romans.  The hatred of the Jews.  The desperation of Mary's screams as she watched her innocent son be put to death in one of the most brutal forms of execution ever invented.

I was not comfortable watching The Passion of the Christ.  I would prefer to not think too much about the Via Dolorosa - the Way of Suffering that Jesus had to bear for me.  But it was powerful.  It was well-researched, done in the original languages with subtitles.  It left me changed.

How can I not serve the God who would come down from heaven and suffer this for me?

The Passion of the Christ is rated R because of the graphic depiction of the real events, and it is not appropriate for younger children.  I would very much recommend it, however, for older teens and adults.  As we prepare our hearts for Resurrection Day, this movie is an excellent way to meditate on what came in the days before.

Church People DVD - Momentum Review and Giveaway

 

We could all use a good laugh right now, and Church People is a movie your whole family can LOL to from the comfort of your own home!  I shared a review of this movie last March when it was in theaters.  Did you get a chance to see it?  If not, this is your chance, because it is now on DVD!

It is recurring theme in American churches.  Many of us grew up in small churches, sang hymns, sat on wooden pews, read the King James Version, and stood as the ushers brought the plates forward, singing the Doxology.  So our reaction - especially those of us who grew up in the 80s, during the coming-of-age of the Christian pop music genre - is to put on a big concert.  What can we do to overcome the old traditional ways and bring people in?  We have to bring them in and then just give them a morsel of truth while they are here.  Bigger is better.  More music.  More lights.  More flashy.  Bring in the smoke machines.  More, more, more!  When does it stop?  Forty years later, we are looking at church services becoming rock concerts, and we are wondering, Isn't the Gospel enough?

That's the question youth pastor Guy Sides is asking as PR people rain down beach balls on him on stage and bring a Superman costume for him to try on in the middle of his massive book tour.  (The writer in me is wondering how anyone ever got so popular on a book tour!)  He is "America's Youth Pastor."  And he's ready to give up.

Church People is making the list of one of my favorites of the movies I've gotten to review, right up there with Mom's Night Out.  If you love good Christian comedy, you will love this movie!  It is a great lead-in to the Easter season.

Momentum Review: Vindication Season 2 And A GIVEAWAY!

 

A couple of weeks ago I shared with you a new police drama series on Pure Flix called Vindication.  Season 2 is now airing, with a new episode released each Wednesday.  I am enjoying Season 2 even more than Season 1, as the plot between the episodes is more contiguous, and there is a cliffhanger at the end of each episode that keeps my interest piqued.

A few days ago, I finally got a chance to watch Episode 5, "Game of Life," which first aired last Wednesday.  The transition from last week's cliff-hanger, where Becky first met Anthony, to where he was at the beginning of this episode, was a little abrupt.  It feels like a major plot point that should have been developed a little more.  That said, I enjoyed getting to know the new character, Anthony, in this episode, as well as seeing Precinct 2 and Precinct 1 share in a little healthy community competition!

The characters in this drama feel true-to-life and the plot stays interesting.  If you haven't been keeping up with Vindication as it comes out each week, take some time to binge-watch it this weekend!  Speaking of which, I need to go catch Episode 6, which aired tonight!

Momentum Review: Courageous Legacy and a Drawing!

I had a chance to watch this old favorite with a new ending this week, and it was as excellent as I remembered!  For those of you who have been fans for the past 10 years, this is a great chance to see the movie all over again on the big screen in the theater and to find out what has happened with some of your favorite characters.  For those of you who have never seen this movie (or like my children, saw it when you were young but don't remember it), go see it now!

While pastoring a church in Georgia, Alex Kendrick, who also had a background in communications, read a survey indicating that films were more influential than churches in changing public opinion.  He and his brother Stephen then began to write and produce movies that would impact the world for Christ.  In addition to Courageous, they have produced Flywheel, Facing the Giants, Fireproof, The War Room, and Overcomer. 

While I believe that people and the church must be instrumental in introducing individuals to Christ and really changing people's lives, I also believe that film and media are a powerful tool that Christians should continue to use to spread the Gospel message and impact the world.  Courageous was done well and has become a part of our home library.

Courageous Legacy opened in theaters across the country today!  Go see it!

Momentum Review: Vindication Season 1

 

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, to vindicate is "to free from allegation or blame." 

Pureflix has just released the second season of their popular crime drama, Vindication, and my son and I binged the first season to get ready!  The ten episodes of the first season did not disappoint.  At the beginning, it looked like each episode was going to be a separate case, and while that was true, later in the season, you started to see background story that was weaving through them all with Detective Travis and his family.  The plot was integrated well and the characters and their issues were believable.

While the show is produced with a Christian worldview and is marketed as teen-friendly, I would interject that it is more for older teens.  The subject matter is dealt with appropriately, but the show does deal with adult themes such as affairs, drugs, human trafficking, and prostitution.  It also deals with teenage relationships and sexting, and if your teen is ready to discuss these topics, it is a good breaking ground for discussion.  I watched Season 1 with my 15-year-old son, and while the plot kept him somewhat interested in watching all the episodes to see what would happen, the show was a bit intense for him; he prefers lighter subjects and a bit of humor.  He hasn't really watched other police dramas.

As crime dramas go, this one is top-notch, and the actors are stellar.  I am excited to see T.C. Stallings join the cast in Season 2!

FlyBy Review: Before the Wrath (and a Giveaway!)

 

During this season every year, a number of movies and stories come out reinforcing this one theme:  BELIEVE.  Everyone is searching for something to believe in.  There are phrases such as "Seeing isn't believing; believing is seeing;" "Believe in yourself;" and "Sometimes, you just have to believe."  Believe in Santa Claus, believe in aliens, believe that anything can happen.

Why is this such a popular theme?  Well, I think that people do want something to believe in, but as much as I truly love almost every movie about Santa Claus ever made, in real life, believing in something that is not true simply for the sake of believing is empty.  It is tragic.  I need to KNOW that what I believe is TRUE.

So, do you believe in the Rapture?  Do you believe that Jesus Christ is coming back to take his bride, the church, to be with him in heaven?

It is a heavy question.  Studies are showing that up to 25% of Christians do not even believe this is going to take place, to say nothing of non-Christians.

As this year, 2020, draws to a close, lots of people are asking questions about the End Times.  Is this it?  Is prophecy being filled before our eyes?  Or is prophecy even real?  

Why is belief in the Rapture important?  Let me take a moment to say that I do not take a stand on whether the Rapture will be pre-tribulation, post-tribulation, mid-tribulation, or anything else.  I do not know if it will happen in my lifetime or if it is still a thousand years away.  I have no insight as to whether 2020 is ushering in the End Times.

What I do know is this: Jesus Christ is coming back, and we must be ready.  This is not a mere opinion to be debated.  It's either true or it's not.  If it is not true, then I suppose I am wasting my life by believing it.  But if it is true, don't you want to be ready?  You can't make it less true by not believing it or choosing to just not think about it.  If it is True, then don't you want to know?

Before the Wrath is a movie narrated by Kevin Sorbo that highlights the importance and impact of Biblical prophecy.  It features the following experts with fascinating insight:

This documentary was extraordinarily well-done.  The writers do not claim to know when the events will take place, nor do they comment on any specific current event fulfilling or not fulfilling prophecy.  They do not claim to have special knowledge or revelation.  They do give a factual and enlightening look at Biblical prophecy and why it is important.

The one criticism I would have is that I would like to know where they got their research on Galilean customs in the first century and how they were different from the regions around them.  I will be researching this further to see if I can corroborate that data.

Meanwhile, I recommend this movie for everyone.  One thing I can say about 2020 is that it is a year that has caused us to take a good, hard look at what is important and make hard decisions about our lives.

Today I would like to use my blog to direct you to someone else's blogpost.  In homeschooling my children, I have taught them what people believe about evolution, creationism, and the theory of intelligent design.  We have talked about what a worldview is, and how every person looks at the available evidence through the lens of his or her worldview.  My children know that I believe in creationism and that we study science so that we can learn more about God and his creation.

When my oldest two began secular college classes, however, they encountered the view that religion has no place in the scientific world, and even that those who believe in God must somehow be uneducated, because anyone who is educated enough will realize that God is not real and certainly is not a part of science.  The theory of evolution is no longer treated like a theory but is called "fact" in these classes.

Does religion, or faith, have a place in science?  Can a highly educated person believe in God?

All Saints

With all that has been going on in the world lately, I could really use some good news!  That is why I am really excited to watch All Saints with John Corbett!

"What's going to happen to them when we leave?"

"Well, let's pray for them and ask for God's help."

"Aren't. . . aren't you God's help?"

This movie, which opens on August 25, may be the most well-timed movie of the year.  We hear about refugees, racism, and churches closing their doors all across America.  It's in the news.  People post on Facebook their opinions on every problem.  Who is DOING something about it?  As Mr. Rogers used to say, where are the helpers?

In the midst of all the bad news and discouragement, one pastor, Michael Spurlock, was sent to close down a church that was failing.  When he found a group of refugees from Southeast Asia asking for help there, he determined to ask for God's help for them.

That's when his son asked him, "Aren't you God's help?"

Remembering Mildred

I've known a lot of "Mildreds" in the church all around America.  It seems like every area has a "Mildred" participating in the service projects, teaching Sunday School, or cooking for the potlucks.  I met Mildred in Saltville, Virginia, just before my husband and I were married, more than 20 years ago.  Her husband, Buck, had passed on a short time before, and she was running his Drive-In with the help of her children and grandchildren.

Buck Maiden opened Buck's Drive-In in Saltville, Virginia, years ago.  I don't know what year it opened, but people we knew there talked about going when they were kids.  It is off the beaten path and little-known by the outside world, but the parking lot is packed on a Friday night after a high school football game.  People who have moved away from the area will drive hours just to go back and get a Buck's hot dog or milkshake.  Buck and Mildred lived in a little house behind the Drive-In, and when Buck left this world, Mildred kept the staple of the community going.  It has always been one of the most popular places around.

When my husband and I got married, my husband was preaching at Mildred's church, Main Street Christian Church in Saltville.  The first time we went to eat at Buck's, Mildred would not take our money.  She said our meal was "on the house."  Each time we went back, it was the same.  "I know preachers don't make a lot of money," she said.  "I can do my part to use the business God gave me to help provide for my preacher."  One time we tried to sneak by quickly when Mildred was not there.  We took our money out to pay for our meal.  "Oh, no!" said her granddaughter.  "Grandma won't let me take money from you.  Her preacher is not allowed to pay here!"

While we did not want to take advantage of Mildred's kindness, I will admit there were some days in those early days of our marriage when the grocery bill was tight.  We would get a little tired of the beans-n-weenies or the ramen noodles. We would head down to Buck's Drive-In, and Mildred would always feed us.

In the years since we've left Saltville, we've ventured off the interstate and stopped by Buck's many times when we were traveling through.  We've taken friends and our kids.  I'd like to think we've given enough business back to make up for all the free meals we ate, but I know Mildred never wanted us to pay her back.  What she gave, she was giving to God.  I daresay we were not the only hungry people she fed.  She was a member of the priesthood of believers, using her livelihood to serve God because serving God was a way of life for her, not something she just did on Sundays.

Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people.

When I went to Buck's Drive-In this past weekend, I found out that Mildred left us in 2015.  She is greatly missed, but Buck and Mildred's legacy lives on.  This weekend, I introduced my youngest to the best hot dogs (or corn dogs) this side of the Mississippi, as well as an important part of our family history.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took me in.

I am running very late with this review, as I was supposed to post it last week so that you could see the first episode this past Sunday night!  Well, if you found Signed, Sealed, Delivered on the Hallmark Channel Sunday night - created by Martha Williamson, executive producer of Touched By an Angel - then you know what a great treasure it is.  If you didn't, let me get you tuned in this week!

Whatever does happen to all that mail that can't be delivered?  Well, I've had it returned to me because I got one digit wrong and the post office refused to deliver it until I corrected the digit and applied another stamp.  In the original Miracle on 34th Street movie, the postal workers delivered all the letters addressed to "Santa Claus" to the old man who claimed to be Kris Kringle who was on trial at the courthouse.  According to this show, however, there is a department assigned just to track down the recipients of undeliverable mail.  The mysteries they uncover and their extreme seriousness and dedication to their task, which is amusing at times, make for a great television mystery show.

I watched one episode of this new gem, and I am hooked.  So is my 8-year-old son, who begged to start it over because he missed the beginning.  The characters are immediately endearing, and the show appeals to all ages.  What I really love is that the show has Christian content but does not seem like an hour of preaching.  It is good, wholesome, family entertainment from a Christian worldview.  Bits of Scripture are sprinkled into the conversation along with quotes from Shakespeare.  As C.S. Lewis said (not sure that I have the exact quote), we don't need more Christian writers; we just need more writers who are Christian.

The new original series Signed, Sealed, Delivered is a wonderful combination of romance, comedy and drama that follows the lives of four postal detectives who transform themselves into a team of detectives to track down intended recipients of undeliverable mail. Their missions take them out of the office where redirected letters and packages can save lives, solve crimes, reunite old loves and change futures by arriving late but somehow always on time. The team includes charming Oliver O’Toole (Eric Mabius), the group's leader is a man of faith who prayerfully approaches his work with the goal of making a difference in people's lives; new team member, Shane McInerney (Kristin Booth), a technophile who brings 21st century sensibility to the group; free-spirited, “girl next door” Rita Haywith (Crystal Lowe) who has a photographic memory; and lovable Norman Dorman (Geoff Gustafson), a master in conventional research methods.
