Sharing News from CICM

In India, the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, have experienced massive floods and landslides that have devastated the Indian and Nepali landscapes, displaced more than 65,000 people and killed over 100 with the number fearing to be higher. Please pray for these areas as CICM has evangelists that work in these states. The flooding and landslides were caused by monsoon rains that arrived 2 weeks early, crippling the unprepared countries.

Uttarakhand, which is called the
"Land of the Gods," suffered massive devastation in the area. The Hindu Shrine of Kearnath is damaged and the area around it is submerged under mud.

Hundreds of homes and hotels are destroyed and many roads are completely washed away. A large rescue operation is underway with helicopters dropping emergency supplies to the more than 60,000 stranded. The Yamuna River, in New Delhi, has also risen to its highest level in years and is beginning to flood
the city.

Although CICM's focus is evangelism, humanitarian aid opens the doors for sharing the Gospel. By showing the compassion of Christ through giving practical physical necessities, we also have the opportunity to share the Gospel message. Join us in praying for the victims of this disaster and their families and all those affected by the disaster. Even among the extreme devastation, there is an opportunity for Northern India to witness the light of Christ.

Please consider aiding in this rescue and relief operation. CICM will bring relief aid once the areas become reachable as weather and wreckage is making rescue efforts difficult. Gifts can be sent to 9425 N Meridian St, suite 281 Indianapolis, IN 46260 or a contribution to theCICM General Fund

Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and generosity to those in India.

GOD Bless,
Dr. Ajai and Indu Lall
and the entire CICM team

Caterpillars for Dinner

Four and a half years ago, my husband was deployed and I had four children, ages 2-8, and the dog at home.  I homeschooled, potty-trained, cooked, cleaned, brushed people's teeth, and clipped people's nails.  I did everything.  The vet was telling me I should be brushing my dog's teeth every day.  Yeah, whatever.  The dog was lucky if he got a bath or two the whole deployment!!  The yardwork was so behind it was embarrassing, as was the state of my mini-van.  I finally paid someone to mow the lawn and clean the car.  I felt like I barely made it through that deployment.  But the kids were all happy and healthy, so what's a few blades of grass grown as high as trees in your yard?!

Things have gotten easier gradually since then; we just finished another year with my husband gone, but my kids are older and able to help more and do more for themselves now.  I still don't brush the dog's teeth, but he actually gets an extra long walk every so often from my son, so his life is good.

Suddenly, school is out for the summer, my husband is retired from the Navy and home looking for another job, and my oldest two kids are cooking dinner once a week each.  My husband loves to grill outside for dinner, as does my oldest son.  I feel like I'm living a life of leisure.  I think this is the first time since my kids were born that I've actually felt like I'm starting to catch up on my "to-do" list!

So what does all this have to do with caterpillars for dinner?  Well, my oldest 3 kids have been wanting to fix dinner one night a week each.  The oldest 2 can do it by themselves, while I still help #3.  They each pick their recipes and write down the ingredients before we go shopping each week.  Most recipes have to be at least doubled for our family of 6, so they are responsible for figuring out how much of each ingredient they need for that.  We praise their efforts highly when we partake of what they have prepared.

This, of course, leads to the little one wanting to cook dinner for the family by himself!  So he looked through the kids' cookbooks and found the recipe for caterpillars.  There are few things that can make you prouder when you are 7 years old than telling people you made your family caterpillars for dinner!

You can pretty much see in the pictures what is on the caterpillar.  The base is half of a bagel cut in half again and made into an "S" shape.  Top it with mozarella cheese, ketchup,  hot dog pieces, and mustard.  Use pimento-stuffed-olive halves for eyes and pretzel sticks for antennae.  Then bake.  You can find the exact recipe in Pampered Chef's Let's Eat recipe book, which is full of fantastic ideas for kids.  He's making the mini-burger-bites pictured on the front next.

Make some caterpillars for dinner and beat the summer doldrums!

Happy cooking!

Strawberry Pie

I LOVE strawberry season!  I am pretty sure that strawberries are far and away the best food that God created.  So each year, our family goes to the strawberry farm and picks about 40 lbs!

We love strawberry shortcake, strawberries with whipped cream or chocolate, strawberry smoothies, and just plain bowls of strawberries all by themselves, but my absolute favorite is my mother's strawberry pie.  Now, I am sure this is not an original recipe, and I wouldn't be surprised if it came off of some gelatin or whipped cream container back in the 1970s.  I'm not really sure where she got it.  But I've never had this type of pie made by anyone outside of our family, and it is the best I've ever had, so I am going to share the very easy recipe here.

You will need:
A pre-prepared pie shell
As many sliced strawberries as you can pile into it (about 2 cups)
1 cup sugar
1 box (3 oz) strawberry gelatin
4 tblsp cornstarch
2 cups boiling water

Tip 1:  I usually use a 6 oz box of gelatin and double the recipe.  You'll eat the first pie by yourself, anyway.
Tip 2:  Mix the cornstarch in a little warm water until it dissolves first.  If you put it directly into the boiling water mixture, it will make insoluble clumps.
Tip 3:  You can make this sugar-free with a homemade sugar-free crust, 1 cup of splenda, and a box of sugar-free gelatin.

Mix the sugar, gelatin, cornstarch, and boiling water.  Cook until thick and clear, stirring continually.  Cool.  Pour into pie crust over sliced strawberries.  Chill.

Serve with whipped cream.

I would have shown you a picture of the finished product, but my family ate it too fast!

Happy strawberry-picking!  :-)

You may have wondered about the perspective in which our new Theory of Intelligent Design was written in, well here's your chance to hear from the author, Debra Haagen.
Image
"Before you purchase the Study Guide, you may be wondering what the leaning of the author is.  Truthfully, I am a young-earth Creationist.  I believe that the Bible is true and literal, and I believed that before I had any scientific evidence of it, so I fit the definition of a Creationist.  In today's world, however, we deal with all kinds of people, sometimes including our own children, who are not convinced that the Bible is infallible.  Sometimes saying, "because the Bible tells me so" is not enough evidence for a scientific-leaning mind.  I teach Intelligent Design Theory as a science class because it deals with scientific theories and evidence both for and against Evolution and Creationism.  I believe it is good for us to teach this objective study to our students.  For those who believe in Evolution, I believe you may find there is a lot of evidence that you were not taught in school and at which you may want to at least take a second look.  For those who believe in Creation but have not studied a lot of the scientific evidence, these are tools your children will need during a secular education in today's world, especially if they go on to study science at a University.  And if you already know a lot about this subject, this Study Guide will give you an organized way to teach it, complete with lapbook templates and/or journaling pages."

"Where did this world come from?"
Recent talk of the theory of intelligent design raises several questions.  Is it a form of Creationism?  Is it more of a theological argument than a scientific study?  Do intelligent design theorists believe in God?  These questions are answered in my Study Guide on The Theory of Intelligent Design from Knowledge Box Central.  In this article, I would like to briefly answer these questions and tell what the theory of intelligent design is and is not.
There have been many answers to the question, "Where did this world come from?"  The Ancient Greeks believed it involved a clash between the gods and the Titans, and some recent ideas have included an early visit from aliens or perhaps a "great spaghetti monster."  The two mainstream ideas, however, that have had churches and public schools at odds with each other for some decades, are Creation and Evolution.
