The Fall of the Roman Empire (the western half) in 476 AD ushered in the beginning of the Middle Ages. The time period from roughly 500 AD to 1500 AD is sometimes called the "Dark Ages," because much Greco-Roman classical learning was lost, many people in the general population were illiterate, and disease and death were rampant. Further study reveals, however, that there was much more learning and studying going on than one might have supposed. Monks in monasteries worked hard at copying the Bible and other ancient manuscripts, illuminating the pages with their beautiful drawings. Agriculture boomed, and the building blocks for the Renaissance and Modern Times were laid.
