National T-Rex Day! Have you heard of such a thing?  No, no, neither had I.  This morning my 12-year-old yelled, "I declare that today is National T-Rex Day!  Yayyy!"  Much to his disappointment, the homeschool principal did not agree to observe the holiday with a day off of school, so, we continued with school as normal!  In recognition of the newly-declared holiday, however, I will share some of our favorite dinosaur books! Dinosaurs By Design is written from a Creationist point-of-view. Danny and the Dinosaur is fiction and contains no Creationist or Evolutionary points of view. First Big Book of Dinosaurs is written from an Evolutionary point of view.

Kindle History Corner This week, we have finished talking about the Reconstruction period following the American Civll War, and we are talking about Westward Expansion in the 1800s. Above is a picture of 1880 Town near Deadwood in South Dakota, which we visited several years ago.  If you live close enough, this would be a great field trip for this time period!  Below is the antique portrait we had taken of our family in Rapid City, South Dakota. Westward Expansion Today we watched Legends of the Wild Wild West on Amazon Prime.  Throughout this week, we will talk more about each of the people in this documentary.  We will be reading a biography of Sitting Bull and one of Buffalo Bill, and on Friday we will watch Annie Get Your Gun!  We have Annie Get Your Gun on a compilation DVD, link below.  For older children, you may want to consider the movies Wyatt Earp or Dances with Wolves.  These are both rated PG-13, so parents should use their discretion. Kindle History Corner I hope everyone has been enjoying studying the American Civil War Period biographies!  There are so many!  We wrapped up our American Civil War study with the biographies and with talking about our own family history.  We had ancestors on both the North and South sides of the conflict. My husband's great-grandfather, Daniel Saxton (pictured far left), fought for the Union as a very young man.  He may have lied about his age to enlist under the age of 16.  He marched in Sherman's March across the South in 1864. My great-great-great-grandfather, Brice Martin, fought for the Confederacy in the 57th Virginia Infantry.  He died of disease in a Union prison on April 16, 1865, at Hart's Island, New York Harbor. Late 1800s We will now move into the last half of the 1800s, which included Reconstruction, re-uniting the North and South, and new areas being industrialized.  Inventions increasingly became available to the masses.  Photography became more common-place, bringing us an extensive photographic history of the age that we've not had of any period in history prior to this. Westward Expansion grew the Nation. Relations with the Native Americans were strained. This week we will focus on the Reconstruction. FREEBIE Download this FREEBIE about the Early American West!
