I use the Internet - a lot! Some days I feel like I'm in front of the computer most of the day. My children use the Internet as well as eBooks for some of their school. One thing that has horrified me in this Internet age, however, is how few children use the library anymore! Going to the library was one of my favorite activities as a child, and it has been a favorite for my children as well. Ebooks are convenient, but there is something about having those pages in front of you that you can touch and turn with your fingers. Our house is full of books, but my children love going to the library and finding new books that are different from what we have at home - no matter how good the ones we have at home may be! In addition, while the Internet is a useful source of vast information, children need to learn how to conduct research without it!
I was delighted to see that Bryce Westervelt had written a book to teach young children about how to use the library. The target audience is a bit younger than my children, but the content and the illustrations are delightful. If it had a few pages about using the Dewey Decimal System, I would be ecstatic!
Pomodoro Penguin and the Library Lemur is a great introduction to the library for preschool or early elementary children. If you are a frequent library user, it is a great supplement. If not, get your children started: read
Pomodoro Penguin and the Library Lemur and get going towards your local library!
