We all have a picture of who we think God is. When we get down to the foundation of what we believe, the truth is that God is exactly who He says He is – a good, good Father.
What is your view of who God is? I know, it's a big question that we can't answer in one blogpost. In talking to people over the years, I have realized that so many people's picture of God is influenced heavily by their relationship with their earthly fathers. A person who has a good relationship with his own earthly father will see God as a good father who loves him. A person whose father was not involved in her life may see God as distant and unreachable. A person whose father was strict, legalistic, or even abusive may see God in the same way.
The fact is, no matter what your relationship is with your earthly father, or even if that relationship is non-existent, you have a good father in heaven. He never changes. Luke 11:11 says:
Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!God is not a cosmic Santa Claus or Genie-in-the-lamp who grants every wish on demand. Neither is He a pushover who hands out mercy without justice. He is also not an angry deity who casts lightning bolts for no reason. He is a GOOD FATHER who knows what you need before you even ask, and who desires a real relationship with you in the good times and the bad.
I have always liked Chris Tomlin because of his music, but also because of his heart for worship. He has always seemed to be more interested in leading others in worship, and in helping others to be worship leaders, than in the performance. We have sung his recent song, "Good, Good Father" (written by the worship band Housefires) a lot at church already. Now you can see the video of the song performed by Chris Tomlin with Pat Barrett of the Housefires, as well as the story behind the song.
